Remake Patek Philippe PP Golden Ellipse 5738R: Where to Buy the Best Version

Okay, so, let me tell you about this little project I’ve been working on. I’ve always loved the look of those fancy Patek Philippe watches, especially the Golden Ellipse. Man, that design is something else, right? But let’s be real, dropping a ton of cash on a watch just isn’t in the cards for me right now. So I started looking for a more, shall we say, “budget-friendly” way to get that Golden Ellipse vibe.

First, I spent a good chunk of time just staring at pictures of the real deal online. I mean, hours. I really wanted to understand what makes the 5738R, you know, the rose gold one, so special. It’s all about that “golden section” thing, that 1 / 1.6181 ratio the old Greek guys figured out. That’s what gives it that perfect, balanced look. And the rose gold, so simple, not too flashy. The size is good for me, too, like 34.5 x 39.5 mm. Not too big, not too small.

I read somewhere that the movement is some kind of ultra-thin, self-winding thing. Honestly, I don’t know much about watch movements, but it sounds impressive, right?

Then came the hard part – finding parts that looked the part. I found that the real Patek 5738R is way out of my price range, somewhere around $8-9k. Forget about it! So I searched everywhere for a rose gold case that had that same kind of shape. It took forever, but I finally found one that was close enough. It’s not perfect, but it gets the job done.

  • Case: This was the biggest hurdle. I wanted that specific rose gold tone, but also needed to find that same smooth, classic case style, not to mention size. I probably looked at hundreds of cases, I’m not kidding.
  • Dial: Okay, the dial was a bit easier. I needed a simple black dial, you know, the classic, easy-to-read kind.
  • Hands: Rose gold hands, that was the goal. And just the hour and minute hands, nothing more, just like the real thing.
  • Strap: Black, shiny leather strap – that’s what the original has. This one was the easiest part to find.

Putting it all together was a bit of a pain. I’m not exactly a watchmaker, you know? But I watched a bunch of videos online and figured it out. Took me a few tries, but I got it all together in the end.

And you know what? It actually looks pretty darn good! I mean, it’s not a real Patek Philippe, obviously. But it’s got that same kind of classic, elegant look, and it didn’t cost me an arm and a leg. I mean, I probably got the whole thing put together for way, way less than a real one. The key was finding that rose gold case that was similar to the real deal. That’s what really makes the whole thing work, I think.

I’m not trying to fool anyone, of course. It is obviously not the real deal. But I’m really proud of how it turned out. It’s a fun little project, and I learned a lot along the way. Plus, now I have a cool-looking watch that reminds me of that beautiful Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse, and that’s good enough for me. It is like it’s paying homage to the original. A nice little tribute, you could say.

I know it’s not the same as owning the real thing, but hey, it’s a start, right? And who knows, maybe one day I’ll be able to get my hands on a real 5738R. But until then, I’m pretty happy with my little homemade version.

Now I wear it all the time. It’s a good conversation starter. People ask about it, and I get to tell them the whole story. It’s fun. I was thinking of putting together another one, maybe a different style next time. We’ll see. But for now, I’m just enjoying this one. I actually really like it. Maybe I’ll make a couple more, for friends or something. It’s a fun hobby, and it keeps me busy.

I guess the whole point of this little adventure was to prove that you don’t need a ton of money to appreciate good design. And maybe, just maybe, you can even create something pretty cool yourself, with a little bit of effort and a whole lot of patience.
