I’ve always been a watch guy. I mean, I love a good timepiece. Not just for telling time, but also as a fashion statement. Recently, I decided to take a closer look at my OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch, the one with the open case back. You know, the kind where you can see all the intricate little gears and mechanisms working away inside.

First, I had to make sure I had the right tools. I remembered reading something about how easy it is to mess up the case back if you’re not careful. I definitely didn’t want to ruin my precious watch. So, I got myself a three-pronged opener. I mean I’m not going crazy with my tools. I’m not trying to be some kind of professional watchmaker. I did a bit of research online and saw some folks talking about those fancy Bergeon tools, but that’s just way over the top for what I needed. I think that is just too much for me.

I was a bit nervous at first, I won’t lie. But I carefully positioned the opener on the back of my Speedmaster and gave it a gentle twist. It took a little bit of effort, but I felt it start to loosen. Success! I was so excited to peek inside my own watch! I mean, how many times do you have the opportunity to see the insides of a watch like this?

And man, was it worth it! Seeing the movement inside was amazing. It’s like a tiny, perfectly engineered city in there. All those tiny parts moving in harmony. I could have stared at it for hours. This is an OMEGA Speedmaster reference 311.30.42.30.01.006. I saw that online and that is exactly what I have. I think it has this caliber 3861 movement. I think I saw that is a newer version of what they used to use.

I was also curious about the whole hesalite crystal thing. I’d seen some chatter online about people wishing OMEGA offered the hesalite with the open case back. Mine has the sapphire crystal, which is nice, but I can see the appeal of the hesalite. It’s got that vintage vibe. And it seems like some of the older models had that, but they changed it at some point. I also saw that this watch is like 42mm, but the bezel is a bit smaller, like under 40mm. It doesn’t feel too big on my wrist, though.

I know some people say that the Speedmaster isn’t as accurate as other luxury watches like a Rolex or something, but I don’t really care. It’s close enough for me, and it’s just such a cool watch. Plus, it’s got that whole history with the moon landings and everything. I mean, come on, how cool is that?

I’m really glad I took the time to open up my Speedmaster and take a look inside. It’s given me a whole new appreciation for the craftsmanship and engineering that goes into these watches. And honestly, it’s just really cool to see how it all works. I’m sure this won’t be the last time I do this. I’m already thinking about which watch I want to peek inside next!
