So, I’ve been eyeing the OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch for a while now. You know, the one with the open case back? I’ve always been a fan of watches, and there’s just something about seeing the inner workings of a beautifully crafted timepiece that gets me excited. It’s like looking under the hood of a classic sports car.
I finally decided to pull the trigger and get one for myself. It was not a simple decision, because the price is not friendly. But I think it worths the money. I did a bit of research online, I knew there were a couple of different versions, hesalite version and sapphire version, the hesalite version usually comes with a solid case back, while the sapphire one tends to have that transparent back I was after. My target was clear, the open case back version.
Then I started calling around to different authorized dealers in my area to see what they had in stock. Some of them only had the solid case back version, which, you know, is cool and all, but not what I was looking for. I wanted to see that intricate movement in all its glory! After a few calls, I found a dealer that had the 311.30.42.30.01.006 model in stock. That’s the one with the sapphire crystal and the open case back. Bingo!
I drove down to the store, and the salesperson brought out the watch. It was even more stunning in person. The stainless steel case, the black dial, the white hands—it all came together perfectly. But the real star of the show was that open case back. I could see the calibre 1863 movement ticking away, with all its gears and springs working in harmony. They told me that calibre 1863 uses more high-grade components and comes with a rhodium-plated finish. It was mesmerizing.
I tried it on, and it felt great on my wrist. Not too heavy, not too light. Just right. It is thinner than any caseback made for the Speedmaster, ever. We talked price, and after a little bit of negotiation, we settled on a number that I was comfortable with. I paid for it, and they gave me all the paperwork, including the original box and papers, which is always a good sign. Year of production is 2024.
I walked out of that store feeling like a million bucks. I’ve been wearing the watch every day since, and I still find myself just staring at the back of it, watching the movement do its thing. Some people might not get it, but for me, it’s like having a little piece of art on my wrist. It’s a reminder of the incredible engineering and craftsmanship that goes into making something like this.
