Today, I tried to imitate a Jaeger-LeCoultre JLC Master Control Chronograph. This is a pretty well-known watch, especially the Reverso models. I had a Master Control Chrono a few years back with the 3 sub-dials and a date display. I remembered it was beautiful but just OK in terms of functionality.
I started by searching online, and I found a lot of discussions about replica Jaeger-LeCoultre watches. It’s wild how many “first copy” or “fake” watches are out there. People were saying it’s a big problem, especially when shopping online. I even saw some tips on how to spot fakes. They said the only sure way is to take it to a jeweler who specializes in watches. For a small fee, they’ll check it out and tell you if it’s real.
Then, I looked for someone who actually owns a Master Control Chronograph. I found a forum where a guy mentioned he bought his MC Chronograph Calendar from an online boutique. He said the representative even made a video for him, showing how to change the straps. That’s some top-notch service! The Cellini he mentioned just displays the moon phase, and some Omegas have both a chronograph and a moon phase but no date windows. So I figured I wanted all the complications—chronograph, moon phase, and date.
I also read that Jaeger-LeCoultre and Rolex are both respected brands. Rolex is known for being reliable and having classic designs, with their precise in-house calibers. Jaeger-LeCoultre, on the other hand, is praised for its complex designs and innovative movements, plus they’re a bit more affordable for people just starting with luxury watches. JLC also seems to have a much wider variety of watches, with some really high-end complications and finishes. They do change up materials, gems, and dials a lot.
My Imitation Process
First, I needed to find a watch with a similar layout. I dug through my old watch boxes and found one with a chronograph and date function. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a start. The moon phase was missing, so I had to get creative. I looked up how to change watch face. In the process, I searched for a lot of videos of Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Chronograph Calendar. I found that there is a website called “Jomashop” that sells it. I don’t know if it’s reliable or not, but I just used it as a reference for my watch face. I printed out a tiny moon phase image I found online and carefully stuck it onto the watch face. It wasn’t easy, but it looked pretty good!
Next, I wanted to get the strap right. I didn’t have a fancy leather strap like the real Jaeger-LeCoultre, but I found a decent-looking one that would work. I practiced swapping the strap using the video the guy mentioned earlier. It was tricky at first, but I got the hang of it.
The Result
In the end, my “imitation” Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Chronograph was far from perfect. But, it was a fun project, and I learned a lot. Here’s what I managed to do:
- Chronograph: Got the chronograph hands working like the real one.
- Date: The date window was already there, so that was easy.
- Moon Phase: My printed moon phase looked okay, even though it didn’t actually move.
- Strap: Managed to swap the strap, making it look a bit more like the real thing.
It’s definitely not something I’d try to pass off as real, but it was a fun experiment. I learned a ton about how these watches work and the details that go into them. If you’re ever thinking about buying a luxury watch, definitely do your research and be careful of fakes! It is best to go to authorized dealers. There are many boutiques and salons. Just make sure you can trust them. It’s a big purchase, and you want to make sure you’re getting the real deal.
